Etymology: von Blumenthal Hesychst. 34 assumes a loan from an unknown IE language, from *sm̥-aks-nā, cf. ἅμαξα; very uncertain. - Acc. to Bănăt̨eanu REIE 3, 145, Anatolian, comparing ἀπήνη (q.v.); thus Kuiper FS Kretschmer 213, Fur. 224; quite possible, a variation p\/m being well known in substr. words. Latte's suggestion of a corruption is gratuitous. Cf. καπάνα.
